The best bomber jackets to snap up ahead of the new season

Take your pick from our edit of the staple outerwear

By Alice Howarth

Bomber jackets are instantly recognisable with their round, cinched shape and Jock connotations but the history dates back further than 1950s America. Originally known as ‘flight jackets’, the first bomber jackets were created by the US Army Aviation Clothing Board in 1917 during World War I. The insulated design was created to keep pilots warm in the fighter plane’s open-air cockpits.

Fast forward to over a century later and the bomber jacket is a certified fashion staple having been reimagined countless times. It’s a garment that has come to symbolise the ultimate nonchalance and now resembles a hybrid between a track jacket and a puffer.

A truly trans-seasonal coat, depending on the time of year or the event, there are so many different iterations to choose from. Some are sequinned, some are sheer, some are leather and some are suede – when selecting yours, it really comes down to personal style.

With summer just around the corner, we’ve got our eye on bomber jackets that are great for transitioning into the warmer weather, and helping us to battle the unpredictable UK weather.

You can keep things simple by teaming designs with pared-back knitwear and jeans for a weekend in the city or dress styles up worn over a patterned midi dress and heeled boots – either way, the bomber jacket may just prove to be the most versatile piece in your wardrobe.

This faux-leather style from The Frankie Shop is super cropped, meaning it will look great teamed with a very on-trend of high-waisted trousers.

No one does high-end basics quite like Loro Piana, so if you want to invest in a bomber that you will truly wear forever, this is the one for you. A super relaxed silhouette, the jacket is also reversible, meaning you can wear it with either cashmere or silk facing out.

Bomber jackets have a reputation for being casual, but they don't have to be. This satin style from Nina Ricci is case in point. It even features beautiful bow detail, and can be styled with a matching skirt.

Prada's loose-fitting bomber jacket comes in a beautiful silk fabric, making it perfect for throwing on over dresses during the summer months.

Bottega Veneta

We love this utilitarian take on the bomber from Bottega Veneta with statement buttons up the front and a sharp collar. It would look great layered over a white shirt.

We always turn to Wardrobe NYC for elevated capsule classics, and this khaki bomber is one of our favourite pieces from the brand this season. Reversible, it can be worn with a quilted finish too.

This bomber jacket from Studio Nicholson swaps in a silk finish for nylon, giving it a more relaxed feel. It would look great worn open and oversized with jeans and sandals.
